Dramatic Finish at Le Mans: Inter Europol Competition Claims LMP2 Victory

Le Mans, France – Inter Europol Competition secured a remarkable victory in the LMP2 category at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with their #43 ORECA driven by Nick Yelloly, Kuba Smiechowski, and Tom Dillmann crossing the finish line nearly two minutes ahead of second-place VDS Panis Racing’s #48, following a thrilling final hour of racing.

The race evolved into a gripping duel primarily between the #43 and #48 entries, with VDS Panis Racing dominating the early stages. A pivotal moment came when Yelloly incurred a pit lane speeding penalty, seemingly jeopardizing their chances. However, Yelloly managed to retake the lead in a spectacular last stint, epitomizing the unpredictable nature of endurance racing.

The dramatic finale was underscored by a front-left suspension failure on the #48 ORECA, driven by Esteban Masson, Oliver Gray, and Franck Perera, which allowed Yelloly to reclaim control during the pivotal moments of the race. Dillmann commented, "Le Mans chooses its winners, and we saw that today," reflecting the unpredictable nature of endurance racing.

Securing third in LMP2 was AO by TF’s #199 ORECA, featuring drivers PJ Hyett, Dane Cameron, and Louis Deletraz, who triumphed in the Pro/Am subcategory. They finished a full lap ahead of their nearest rivals, showcasing a well-executed strategy throughout the race. Cameron expressed his delight: "I’m so happy for Louis and PJ … it was crucial for us."

Iron Lynx Proton’s #9 ORECA claimed fourth position overall, while DNF issues plagued several contenders, including both IDEC Sport entries, which suffered wheel nut failures.

In the LMGT3 category, Manthey 1st Phorm dominated the race with a commanding performance, finishing ahead of Vista AF Corse’s #21 Ferrari 296 LMGT3. Driver Richard Lietz celebrated his sixth Le Mans victory, noting, "Le Mans with six victories is incredible," attributing their success to effective teamwork and strategic execution.

Heart of Racing’s Aston Martin fell from first to fourth, and a myriad of retirements affected contenders, including Team WRT’s #46 BMW, which was forced to withdraw after an electrical issue. The #78 Lexus from AKKODIS ASP also did not finish due to damage incurred late in the race.

Looking ahead, the FIA WEC continues with the 6 Hours of Sao Paulo scheduled for July 13th.
