Toyota Gazoo Racing Unveils GR LH2 Racing Concept at Le Mans

Circuit de la Sarthe, France — Toyota Gazoo Racing officially launched its GR LH2 Racing Concept during the Le Mans 24 Hours Hydrogen Village, marking a significant step in hydrogen technology for motorsports.

The GR LH2, which utilizes liquid hydrogen (LH2) as fuel, is an advancement of the company’s earlier GR H2 concept. The chassis is based on the GR010 HYBRID Hypercar and was developed at Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe in Cologne, with the engine sourced from Toyota’s Japanese division.

Technical Specifications:

  • Length: 5,100 mm
  • Width: 2,050 mm
  • Powertrain: Hydrogen engine integrated with a hybrid system

Kazuki Nakajima, Vice President of Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe, emphasized the focus on testing hydrogen technologies rather than immediate competitive application. "Our intent at this moment is to test this car, test hydrogen, and learn about the infrastructure and refueling system," Nakajima stated. He added that the goal is to enhance hydrogen combustion engine technology and that further developments are anticipated.

When queried about a potential race debut, Nakajima mentioned, "From running, it’s not far, but we can’t tell you exactly when. Basically, it is designed to run on track."

The FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) is projected to introduce hydrogen-powered prototypes by 2028, with future regulatory details expected to be unveiled later this week.

Toyota’s GR LH2 Racing Concept represents a critical exploration of sustainable racing technologies, reinforcing the manufacturer’s commitment to evolving beyond traditional fuel sources in competitive motorsports.
