Lola Cars Unveils the T70S and T70S GT, Merging Heritage with Sustainability

Lola Cars has officially launched the T70S and T70S GT, modern re-engineered iterations of the iconic T70. These vehicles employ advanced manufacturing techniques and sustainable materials, reflecting a commitment to performance and environmental responsibility.

Historical Context

The original Lola T70, introduced in 1965 by designer Eric Broadley, gained prominence by dominating the inaugural Can-Am Championship in 1966. It secured a notable victory at the Daytona 24 Hours in 1969, driven by Mark Donohue and Chuck Parsons, overcoming formidable competitors like the Ford GT40 and Porsche 908.

Technical Specifications

Both models maintain fidelity to the T70’s spirit while incorporating modern engineering:

  • T70S:

    • Features a lightweight aluminum monocoque chassis and a 5.0-liter small block Chevrolet V8 producing 530 bhp.
    • Capable of a top speed of 203 mph, with a 0-60 mph acceleration in 2.5 seconds.
    • Accompanied by an FIA Historic Technical Passport for competition eligibility.
  • T70S GT:

    • Equipped with a 6.2-liter small block Chevrolet V8, generating 500 bhp, reaching a top speed of 200 mph, and accelerating from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds.
    • Ideally configured for road use, featuring improved ergonomics and climate control while preserving the original vehicle’s character.

Innovations in Sustainability

A significant advancement in the T70S project is the Lola Natural Composite System (LNCS). This patent-pending technology utilizes renewable materials, including plant and basalt fibers combined with a bio-resin from sugar cane processing waste. Lola claims this results in a bodywork system that is 100% petrochemical-free and significantly reduces environmental impact.

Mishern Chetty, CEO of Lola Cars, stated, “The T70S project exemplifies our focus on cutting-edge performance technologies and innovation in sustainable materials.” An independent assessment indicates the T70S achieves roughly 54% lower CO₂ emissions compared to conventional manufacturing benchmarks, with certain components seeing reductions of up to 80%.

Future Implications

Peter McCool, Technical Director at Lola Cars, emphasized the duality of the T70S experience, noting it blends historic motorsport charm with groundbreaking innovation. This project not only honors the legacy of the T70 but also sets a benchmark for the future of historic motoring and motorsport.

Limited to just 16 units, the T70S and T70S GT represent a unique intersection of history and futuristic sustainability in the motorsports world.
