GT2 European Series: Zandvoort Race Weekend Summary

The GT2 European Series experienced a lean turnout with only eight entries for the double-header weekend at Zandvoort, prompting calls for revitalization ahead of the upcoming races at Spa.

Race 1 Highlights

Philippe Prette clinched a stunning overall victory in Race 1, driving the #1 LP Racing Maserati. Starting from pole, Prette maintained a commanding lead over Pro-Am competitor Stefan Rosina (#11 Mičánek Motorsport Lamborghini), finishing just under one second clear. Despite a crash in qualifying that necessitated pre-race repairs, the LP Racing team delivered, with Prette pulling away early, setting the fastest laps.

Rosina, after inheriting the Lamborghini from driver Bronek Formanek, closed the gap dramatically, reducing Prette’s advantage significantly during the final laps. However, Prette managed to defend his lead effectively, making him the first Am driver to secure an overall win since Elia Erhart at Red Bull Ring in 2022.

The #7 DINAMIC Motorsport Maserati claimed third place overall and second in Pro-Am, with Roberto Pampanini trading positions with Alberto De Martin of the #115 NM Racing Team Mercedes-AMG throughout the race, ultimately finishing strong under driver Mauro Calamia.

In the Am category, the #294 RTR Projects Mercedes-AMG took second, followed closely by the #53 Akkodis ASP Mercedes-AMG.

Race 2 Highlights

In a tightly contested Race 2, Roberto Pampanini and Mauro Calamia secured their first win of the season in the #7 DINAMIC Motorsport Maserati. Starting from the second position, Calamia effectively battled for position early on, eventually taking over after their mandatory pit stop.

Leading the race, Rosina began strong from pole but could not shake off the pace of Calamia. The decisive moment came with less than three minutes remaining when Pampanini capitalized on lapped traffic, executing a well-timed pass on Rosina at Tarzan corner to take the lead.

Prette continued his dominance in the Am class, mirroring his previous day’s performance by finishing third overall and leading the Am category.

The weekend concluded with the Akkodis ASP Mercedes-AMG in second, after Pascal Gibon executed a last-lap maneuver to secure the spot over the RTR Projects entry.
