McLaren Launches Endurance Racing Team Ahead of WEC 2027 Entry
In a significant return to endurance racing, McLaren has officially unveiled its new team, McLaren United AS, set to compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) Hypercar class starting in 2027. This announcement marks 30 years since the team’s first Le Mans 24 Hours victory.
Following its initial declaration in April about entering the WEC with an LMDh prototype, McLaren detailed its ambitious plans. The new hypercar, designed internally, will be developed alongside United Autosports, a two-time Le Mans class-winning team. The vehicle will feature a V6 twin-turbo engine, developed in collaboration with Italian constructor Dallara, aimed for on-track testing by mid-2026.
James Barclay, formerly the Managing Director of JLR Motorsport, will assume the role of Team Principal beginning in September. Barclay was pivotal in establishing Jaguar’s Formula E team and securing its first World Championship title in over two decades.
“I am honoured to be joining a brand with such an incredible history of racing excellence,” Barclay stated. “I look forward to the challenge of building a team that competes at the highest level.”
McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown emphasized the importance of Barclay’s leadership, expressing confidence in the team’s future. “James’s leadership will be crucial as we prepare for our 2027 entry,” Brown remarked.
An exclusive preview of McLaren’s Hypercar challenger will take place at 10:00 CET tomorrow at the Manufacturers’ Village during the 93rd Le Mans 24 Hours.
