Mikhail Simonov Targets LMP3 Transition Following Promising Rookie Test
23-year-old Mikhail Simonov, a seven-time Russian racing champion, is set to make a strategic move into the sportscar arena after demonstrating his potential during the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) Rookie Test at Portimão. The test with 23Events Racing marked Simonov’s first experience behind the wheel of an LMP3 car, specifically the Ligier JS P325 – Toyota.
“I’m so excited because this car has a lot of aerodynamics,” Simonov stated, reflecting on his initial runs, which included five sessions of eight laps each. He finished the day within half a second of the fastest pace in the LMP3 category. This performance is particularly notable as he transitions from a background primarily steeped in ice racing and touring car competitions.
Simonov, who has claimed four Russian Ice Ring titles alongside TCR championships, emphasizes the unique skills he brings from his previous disciplines. “Ice racing is beautiful; it’s like dance in the car, where saving speed through corners is crucial,” he remarked, drawing parallels between handling ice and rain-soaked track conditions.
Looking ahead, Simonov has set his sights on a competitive LMP3 program across Asia and Europe in 2026, distancing himself from TCR racing. “My main dream is to take part in Hypercar,” he stated, underscoring his ambitions within the sport.
Despite the physical demands of the LMP3 car—particularly in terms of neck strain—Simonov is acutely aware of the necessary adjustments ahead. “The last session was terrible for me, because I’m tired,” he admitted, acknowledging the differences in exertion compared to his previous vehicles.
As he aims to refine his skills for his future in sportscars, Simonov’s adaptation to LMP3 and aspirations for a Hypercar career could mark a significant evolution in his already diverse racing trajectory.
