Porsche Unveils One-Off 963 RSP Ahead of 2025 Le Mans

Porsche has officially launched its exclusive one-off road-going 963 RSP, marking a significant moment ahead of the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans. Timo Bernhard, a three-time Le Mans champion, piloted the vehicle during its debut run on public roads near the iconic race location, alongside the historic Count Rossi 917, which inspired this special edition.

The 963 RSP was conceived as a tribute to Roger Penske and embodies a collaborative effort between Porsche AG, Porsche Penske Motorsport, and Porsche Cars North America. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the 917’s debut as a road car.

“This really started out as a ‘what if?’—a passion project,” said Timo Resch, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. The 963 RSP retains the competitive nature of its racing counterpart, utilizing high-quality materials while ensuring it remains fundamentally a race car.

Key technical modifications distinguish the 963 RSP from its race-ready sibling. The vehicle boasts a Martini Silver finish reminiscent of the Count Rossi 917, alongside unique bodywork modifications. Its interior features bespoke tan leather and Alcantara, completed by a single-piece carbon seat.

Significant adjustments were made to permit road usage, including a raised ride height, softened dampers, and a reprogrammed control unit. This allows the headlights to operate similarly to those on standard road cars. Additionally, the 963 RSP’s hybrid 4.6-liter V8 powertrain remains in race tune but has been adapted for smoother power delivery suitable for road conditions. The powertrain now operates on standard pump gas, a notable engineering achievement.

The car meets French and ACO road requirements, having been equipped with Michelin wet-weather tires and even a horn. “Driving down a public road with a 917 beside me felt unreal,” Bernhard remarked on the experience, noting the vehicle’s user-friendly dynamics compared to the typical 963.

Following its debut, the 963 RSP will be showcased at the Circuit de la Sarthe during the 24 Hours of Le Mans, before returning to Stuttgart for display at the Porsche Museum. In July, it will participate in the Goodwood Festival of Speed, alongside the historic 917.

Roger Penske highlighted the longstanding collaboration with Porsche, recalling the success of the 917/30 era. “With this project, we aspired to create the most exciting car imaginable, true to its origins,” he commented, emphasizing the car’s blend of historical authenticity and contemporary performance.

This unique vehicle represents a bridge between Porsche’s legendary past and its future in motorsport, embodying the brand’s quest for innovation while honoring its rich heritage.
