SRO GT Academy Launches GT2 European Series
The SRO Motorsports Group has officially launched the GT2 European Series powered by Pirelli, in collaboration with Maserati and Mercedes-AMG, targeting Silver-graded drivers under 30. This initiative aims to promote driver talent by offering a funded drive in a Mercedes-AMG GT3 at the 2027 GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Endurance Cup.
Key Details of the Academy
The program was announced by SRO founder Stéphane Ratel at the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa. The assessment process prioritizes individual driver performance over co-driver results or external factors such as reliability and luck. The scoring system will evaluate the following:
- Quickest qualifying times
- Fastest race laps
- Average time across each driver’s ten quickest race laps
Points will be deducted for causing accidents or losing control off-track. Unlike traditional formats, race results will not influence the outcome.
Eligibility and Pathway
Currently, only drivers racing Maserati or Mercedes-AMG vehicles are eligible for the GT Academy prize. However, other GT2 manufacturers will be permitted to enter their drivers starting in 2026. This pathway connects GT4 and GT2 to GT3, providing a structured progression for emerging talents.
Industry Support and Vision
Maria Conti, Head of Maserati Corse, expressed pride in the collaboration, emphasizing a commitment to fostering young talent in line with Maserati’s racing legacy, particularly as it approaches its centennial.
Stefan Wendl, Head of Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing, highlighted the initiative’s transparency in evaluating driver capabilities, stating it serves as a strong incentive for aspiring motorsport professionals.
Ratel reiterated the goal of the GT Academy to spotlight speed, performance, and reliability in young drivers, further reinforcing the importance of this novel approach within the GT2 framework.
Upcoming Events
The GT2 European Series will commence its 2026 season at Monza on May 30-31, while the ongoing 2025 campaign continues at Misano this weekend.
