Porsche Motorsport Celebrates 75 Years: Hans-Joachim Stuck Reflects Ahead of Sebring 12 Hours

As Porsche Motorsport marks its 75th anniversary in 2026, legendary racer Hans-Joachim Stuck, who turned 75 on January 1, reflects on his storied career and the upcoming Sebring 12 Hours. Stuck is a two-time 24 Hours of Le Mans victor, a DTM champion, and tied for the fourth most wins at the iconic Sebring International Raceway with three victories.

“I always expected the unexpected at Sebring,” Stuck remarked, reminiscing about his experiences at the track. “It’s not just the fantastic location, but the wonderful American fans that made every visit special.”

Stuck’s mastery of the Porsche 962 in the 1980s is etched in racing history. He cites the 962’s reliability as a key factor in his success, stating that he felt secure driving it at high speeds, free from concerns that plagued other vehicles of the era.

“The driver’s safety was number one,” Stuck emphasized. “In a Porsche, I could concentrate fully on the race.”

In a notable feat during the 1986 12 Hours of Sebring, Stuck and teammates Jo Gartner and Bob Akin experienced a lost wheel while leading by eight laps. Gartner managed to secure victory, showcasing both resilience and the car’s reliability.

“Normally, losing a wheel on a Porsche is unheard of,” he noted with a laugh. “But we still won.”

Stuck fondly recalled the 1985 pole position lap where he hit 131 mph, driven by the demands of his team owner, Bob Akin. He described the balancing act of risking speed without compromising safety on the grass-lined track.

However, his memories are tinged with sorrow, particularly the passing of teammate Bob Wollek in a cycling accident in 2001. Stuck remembers their time together and the profound loss that still resonates.

In anticipation of the 74th running of the Sebring 12 Hours, Porsche enters as the reigning champion with the 963 LMDh, showcasing a legacy that includes a record 19 overall wins at the event. Stuck acknowledged the advancements in technology and safety in modern racing.

“I would love to drive one of these new cars,” he stated, recognizing the stark contrasts with the machines from his competitive days.

The 12 Hours of Sebring is scheduled for March 21 at 10:00 EST, with Stuck looking forward to watching the next generation of drivers carry on the Porsche legacy.
