FIA WEC Introduces Success Handicap System for Hypercars in 2026
The FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) is set to implement a success handicap system for the Hypercar class starting in 2026, as outlined in the new sporting regulations. Article 6.2.2 specifies that weight and power adjustments—based on championship performance—will be utilized to enhance competitive parity across the series, excluding the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The WEC Committee will determine the specific calculations prior to the Prologue, ensuring that modifications are communicated effectively to teams via a Balance of Performance (BoP) table before each race. This marks a significant strategy shift aimed at maintaining competitive balance, complementing the existing BoP adjustments.
The success handicap system has been employed in the LMGT3 category, where ballast is allocated to teams based on their standings, fostering closer racing dynamics. The incorporation of this system in the Hypercar class follows extensive discussions between regulators and manufacturers regarding ways to enhance competition.
Additionally, the rules concerning LMGT3 tire allocations have been updated. Teams will receive six extra tires for six- and eight-hour races, and an additional eight tires for the 10-hour race in Qatar, enabling single-stint strategies on Goodyear tires. This may signify the phasing out of certain tire compounds specifically designed for life extension, such as the Eagle Hard compound introduced this season.
These changes reflect the ongoing evolution of regulations aimed at optimizing the balance and excitement of endurance racing, demonstrating the WEC’s commitment to engaging competition in top-tier motorsport.
