Motorsports Report: Hypercar and GTP Updates

BMW Performance in 2023-2025

BMW’s M Hybrid V8 LMDh debuted in IMSA 2023, fielded by BMW Team RLL, with a notable second-place finish at Sebring and a victory at Watkins Glen. The #25 car secured five podiums, culminating in sixth place overall. In 2024, BMW expanded its efforts to the WEC with Team WRT, achieving its only podium at Fuji. Limited success in IMSA continued into 2024, highlighted by a pair of wins at Indianapolis.

As of 2025, BMW’s WEC performance has improved significantly; however, they managed just one podium at Imola. Strategic missteps in IMSA resulted in disappointing outcomes, prompting a split from RLL after the season. Speculations suggest that WRT may assume North American duties. Though plans for additional entries have been shelved, BMW is reportedly looking into customer car opportunities.

Bosch’s Role

Bosch remains integral, supplying the Motor Generator Unit (MGU) for LMDh hybrid systems and essential electronic components across Hypercar and GTP classes.

Cadillac’s 2023-2025 Journey

Cadillac’s rebranded V-Series R, utilizing a Dallara chassis, debuted in 2023, securing the Teams’ and Drivers’ Championships in IMSA despite only one win at Sebring. The Ganassi #01 car contributed critical victories, including at Laguna Seca, helping Cadillac clinch the Manufacturers’ title.

2024 was challenging for Cadillac in the WEC, marred by accidents and no podiums; however, the teams remained competitive. In a major shake-up, Ganassi exited, and JOTA was introduced for a two-car WEC effort in 2025, alongside Wayne Taylor Racing returning to IMSA.

Despite a rough start in 2025, with limited results, the JOTA team achieved its first major victory with a dominant 1-2 finish at São Paulo, solidifying the V-Series R’s capabilities on the global stage.

Ferrari’s Resurgence

Ferrari’s 499P, their first top-class prototype in half a century, debuted successfully in 2023, earning four podiums and a historic win at Le Mans, solidifying its status in the hypercar realm. The addition of a third car in 2024 resulted in a successful campaign, leading to significant wins, including a remarkable finish at CoTA and another Le Mans victory in 2025.

The 499P Modificata’s launch further underscores Ferrari’s profitable return on its WEC investment, with over 20 units delivered at a price tag exceeding €5 million.

Technical Developments and Industry Trends

Dallara continues to support multiple manufacturers with chassis designs, solidifying its role in the Hypercar and GTP landscapes. Meanwhile, speculation around Bugatti transitioning the Bolide into a racing entity remains unconfirmed, while De Tomaso contemplates entering the hypercar domain.

Convergence of the ACO/FIA LMH and IMSA LMDh regulations has streamlined the competitive landscape, enabling manufacturers to optimize their designs for a unified racing experience.

Outlook

As the 2025 season progresses, key developments indicate a more competitive atmosphere across Hypercar and GTP classes. Teams are focused on refining strategies to extract maximum performance amid the evolving technical landscape.
