Toyota Gazoo Racing Faces Major Setbacks in 2025 WEC Campaign
Toyota Gazoo Racing’s 2025 World Endurance Championship (WEC) season has been marked by significant struggles, following a disappointing performance in the Le Mans 24 Hours and a lackluster result in São Paulo. After clinching the Manufacturers’ Championship just last year, Toyota’s fall from grace is stark, highlighted by finishes of 14th and 15th at Interlagos—its worst results in WEC history.
Team leadership has been vocal about the need for adjustments in the Balance of Performance (BoP), yet the severity of the team’s decline suggests more profound issues. This sentiment is echoed by WEC Team Director Kazuki Nakajima, who expressed accountability for the internal challenges faced this season. “We are doing our best to react to the situation… it’s been very difficult,” Nakajima commented.
Notably, the Le Mans race was particularly dispiriting for Toyota, with Nakajima admitting that for the first time in a decade, he felt the team was outpaced from the start. A misstep in pit strategy further hindered their chances for a podium finish, despite potential for recovery.
Reflecting on recent challenges, Nakajima pointed to factors like tire choice and shifting race conditions: “We had a very good advantage from the tire choice last year… all these elements contributed.” The team has embarked on a comprehensive review of the GR010-Hybrid prototype to enhance performance, with Nakajima stating, “We have different plans to improve… from short-term to long-term.”
Looking ahead, Toyota is also preparing for future hydrogen regulations, having already presented a concept for a hydrogen-powered prototype aimed at transforming their approach in endurance racing. However, Nakajima emphasized the necessity of collaborative efforts to advance these technologies: “We need good support from the organizer side… this cannot be done from only a one-sided effort.”
Despite the current frustrations, Nakajima assures commitment to performing at the highest level, remaining optimistic about regaining competitive strength. “We want to do whatever we can to come back and fight for the win,” he asserted, indicating a determination to improve ahead of the upcoming Austin race.
As the season progresses, Toyota Gazoo Racing’s ability to adapt and respond to these challenges will be critical in restoring its winning legacy in the WEC.
