Le Mans 24 Hours: Free Practice 2 Highlights
Austin, Texas – In a pivotal session ahead of the 2025 Le Mans 24 Hours, Robert Kubica showcased impressive speed, clocking a 3:25.101 in the #83 AF Corse Ferrari during Free Practice 2. However, due to a pit lane speeding violation, this time was scrapped, elevating the #8 Toyota of Ryo Hirakawa to the top with a record of 3:26.156.
Following the Toyota was the #12 JOTA Cadillac, securing third position with a time of 3:26.601, while Pascal Wehrlein’s late push gave the #4 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 fourth at 3:26.748. The #50 Ferrari rounded out the top five.
Conditions for the session were generally favorable, yet the #6 Penske Porsche experienced significant issues, finishing 20th after a front-right tire delamination caused early retirement. Compounding matters, the Porsche is under investigation for potential technical regulation breaches and will start the race from the rear of the grid.
In LMP2, reigning IMSA GTP Champion Dane Cameron led in the AO by TF ORECA with a time of 3:37.515, followed closely by United Autosports’ #22 entry, which trailed by 1.1 seconds.
LMGT3 saw the AKKODIS ASP team dominate with both Lexus RC F LMGT3 cars taking the top spots—Jose Maria Lopez topping the chart with a 3:55.422, just ahead of the sister car.
Several teams faced challenges, including the #33 TF Sport Corvette, undergoing repairs for a gearbox leak, and the #63 Iron Lynx Mercedes, which remained stationary after a crash involving Stephen Grove. Conversely, the #150 Richard Mille AF Corse Ferrari 296 GT3 managed to complete 15 laps despite initial delays due to engine checks.
The session featured a brief 14-minute red flag for debris removal, highlighting the competitive pressure as teams prepare for the next round of practice.
Track action resumes tomorrow with Free Practice 3 scheduled for 14:45 local time.
