Greystone GT Faces Challenges with McLaren GT3 in British GT Championship
In an insightful update on Greystone GT’s progress in the British GT Championship, driver Oliver Webb highlights the team’s ongoing efforts and challenges with the #24 McLaren GT3 Evo, co-driven with Andrey Borodin. Despite past accolades, including Webb’s win in the McLaren Trophy Europe 570S title, the transition to the championship’s Pirelli tyre has posed significant difficulties.
“We were really strong in the GT Open car,” Webb stated, referencing their top-five overall pace last season. However, he noted, “We’ve definitely struggled a lot more with the Pirelli tyres. We still haven’t really figured out why, so it’s a bit of a testing year for us.”
Webb emphasized the differences between the Pirelli DHF compound and their previous Michelin tyres, particularly the lack of lateral grip. He remarked, “For us, it’s about getting the setup we had on the Michelins to work on the Pirellis. But it’s not just a different tyre; it’s a whole new compound.”
Greystone faced a rough start to the season, finishing 13th at Donington Park and encountering technical issues at Silverstone when Borodin damaged the radiator after hitting a sausage curb. “The McLaren GT3s are generally more bulletproof than that,” Webb commented, reflecting on the unexpected nature of the incident.
The following event at Oulton Park saw the team unable to compete due to Borodin’s injury from polo, leading them to focus on testing rather than racing. “Finding that last bit is the challenge,” Webb noted, emphasizing their reliance on team experience to close performance gaps.
Looking ahead, the team is set to participate in the sprint double-header at Snetterton on July 12-13, where they hope to leverage their behind-the-scenes work into competitive results. As Webb asserted, “It’s a privilege to race against great teams and great drivers,” acknowledging the heightened competitiveness in British GT.
Greystone GT’s strategic focus on setup optimization and tyre understanding remains a key storyline as the championship unfolds.
