WEC Qatar Event in Jeopardy Amid Regional Conflict
The ongoing military conflict in the Middle East is casting uncertainty over the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season, particularly the inaugural race scheduled in Qatar at Lusail. Following recent Iranian missile and drone attacks, civilian and logistical operations in the region have been severely disrupted, leading to a suspension of all sporting events in Qatar.
As of now, the first track time for the WEC is slated for March 22, just three weeks away. However, organizers are grappling with limited freight options amid heightened security concerns, putting the event at significant risk. The urgency is compounded by the proximity of the next scheduled race in Imola, Italy, which is less than seven weeks ahead.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem addressed the situation, emphasizing the paramount importance of safety as decisions regarding the future of the Qatar race and other upcoming events—such as the F1 Grand Prix in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia—are deliberated.
While it appears increasingly unlikely that the Lusail event will proceed as planned, organizers are exploring the possibility of rescheduling it towards the end of the season. Current industry assessments indicate that a rapid decision will be essential, as alternatives for securing freight and logistics are rapidly diminishing.
In summary, the safety of all involved remains the highest priority, and stakeholders await a clear directive on the fate of the WEC’s opening event amid the turmoil in the region.
