AF Corse’s Historic Le Mans Win: Insights and Implications

The #83 AF Corse Ferrari, driven by Phil Hanson, Robert Kubica, and Yifei Ye, triumphed at the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans, marking a pivotal moment in the race’s storied history. Their performance not only secured the team’s unbeaten streak in Le Mans but also added a prestigious line to Hanson’s career resume, making him the 35th British winner of the iconic race.

In a contest described by Hanson as “nerve-wracking,” the trio fought hard against an elite field, ultimately finishing just 14 seconds ahead of the #6 Porsche Penske Motorsport team. “Every minute in that final hour went so slowly," Hanson recalled, reflecting on the mental strain of the concluding laps.

Technical Performance and Race Dynamics

The #83 Ferrari demonstrated remarkable pacing, leading the charge before executing a clean final stop, which proved crucial for retaining the lead. “I remember calling my girlfriend and telling her, ‘we’re in the fight, we could win this,’” Hanson said, emphasizing the team’s confidence following competitive Free Practice sessions.

Cadillac’s earlier promise faded, as did challenges from BMW and Toyota, leaving a showdown primarily among the Ferraris and Porsche. The Porsche #6, despite a solid performance, could not capitalize on any crucial mistakes from the Ferrari team, which maintained a strategic edge.

Championship Pursuits Ahead

This victory significantly boosts the drivers’ standings for Hanson, Kubica, and Ye, especially after a non-score at Spa prior to Le Mans. Though AF Corse is not in contention for the manufacturer’s title, the trio leads the Hypercar World Cup, with a comfortable margin against their closest competitors.

Looking ahead, Hanson acknowledged the challenges posed by upcoming circuits unfavorable to the 499P’s characteristics. “The next few races are going to be very tough,” he noted, highlighting the unpredictability of the championship, which remains tight with only 16 points separating them from the leading factory Ferrari crew.

As the motorsport community shifts focus to the next WEC round in São Paulo, Hanson is keenly aware that the euphoria of victory will quickly transition to strategic preparations for the title chase. “I’ll be celebrating the Le Mans win until practice starts in São Paulo,” he concluded, illustrating the drive and focus required as the season progresses.

This win not only reinforces the Ferrari legacy at Le Mans but also sets the stage for an electrifying finish to the championship season.
