Mueller Returns to WEC with Porsche Penske Motorsport at Spa

Nico Mueller is set to make his return to the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at Spa-Francorchamps, driving Porsche Penske Motorsport’s No. 5 963 alongside teammates Michael Christensen and Julien Andlauer. This marks Mueller’s first WEC start since Bahrain last year, stepping in for Mathieu Jaminet as the team prepares for the upcoming Le Mans 24 Hours.

Both Mueller and reigning Formula E champion Pascal Wehrlein are filling key roles for Porsche this weekend, as the team balances participation across clashing WEC and IMSA events. Wehrlein will share the team’s third 963 with full-time IMSA drivers Nick Tandy and Felipe Nasr, while Mueller acts as the reserve driver.

Mueller expressed his enthusiasm ahead of the race: “I am excited, happy and grateful. This is a phenomenal track and venue to be back in WEC and drive for Porsche Penske.” He emphasized the importance of the weekend in preparing for Le Mans, stating, “We want to do a good race and get the team ready for Le Mans.”

Having previously competed in the Hypercar category with Peugeot, Mueller noted similarities in handling and driver experience between the LMH-spec 9X8 and the LMDh-spec 963. “There are specification differences, but I quickly felt comfortable. It’s a smooth transition,” he said, acknowledging the learning curve related to the car’s systems.

Mueller’s recent experience includes a challenging debut at the Sebring 12 Hours, where he finished eighth with privateer team JDC-Miller. “It was a good introduction to the world of the 963,” he recounted, adding that he had to adapt quickly in an intense environment.

Looking ahead, Mueller remains focused on his role at Spa while supporting the team’s preparations for Le Mans, where Porsche aims for its 20th overall victory. He noted, “Every bit of mileage matters. If it comes to needing me in the race, I will be better prepared.”

Mueller’s commitment to both Formula E and potentially WEC remains uncertain for the future, as he stated, “It’s not up to me. I’m just glad to be back in WEC.” For now, his focus remains clear: deliver strong performance and assist Porsche Penske Motorsport as they gear up for one of the sport’s most prestigious events.
