Porsche Unveils 963 RSP for Public Debut Ahead of Le Mans 2025
Porsche has introduced the distinctive 963 RSP road car, marking its first public appearance near Le Mans, in anticipation of the 2025 race. The vehicle, driven by three-time Le Mans winner Timo Bernhard, was showcased alongside the iconic "Count Rossi" Porsche 917, from which it draws design inspiration.
The 963 RSP is a bespoke project commissioned by Roger Penske, whose team oversees Porsche’s factory efforts in both the FIA World Endurance Championship and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. It celebrates 50 years since the legendary 917’s debut, combining elements from its past into a modern context.
“This began as a passion project led by enthusiasts on both the Penske and Porsche teams,” stated Timo Resch, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. “We aimed to create a version of the 963 that replicates the spirit and appearance of the Count Rossi 917.”
Design and Engineering Modifications
The 963 RSP features a Martini Silver exterior, unique bodywork alterations, and a bespoke interior crafted from high-quality tan leather and Alcantara, harkening back to the original Count Rossi trim choices. Significant modifications include:
- Mechanical Adjustments: The vehicle has been tuned for road use with raised ride height, softened dampers, and a reprogrammed control unit for standard road functionality like headlights and turn signals.
- Bodywork Changes: Unique fender vents have been introduced, and rear wing blanking plates—mandatory in the race version—were omitted for the road variant.
- Powertrain Adaptations: Retaining the hybrid 4.6-liter V8 engine, the powertrain has been remapped to allow retail gas operation and smoother delivery, suitable for public use, while still maintaining its racing heritage.
These enhancements, along with the implementation of Michelin wet weather tires and a functional horn, enabled the car to achieve proper licensing for road use under special permissions from French authorities and the Automobile Club de l’Ouest.
Prominent Quotes and Future Appearances
Timo Bernhard described the experience of driving the 963 RSP beside the historic 917 as "unreal," emphasizing the car’s approachable handling characteristics compared to the standard racing model, which allowed for a more comfortable experience without the need for extensive safety gear.
The 963 RSP will be on display at the Circuit de la Sarthe during the 24 Hours of Le Mans, after which it will return to Stuttgart for exhibition at the Porsche Museum. In July, it will also appear at the Goodwood Festival of Speed alongside its predecessor, the 917.
Roger Penske noted the historical significance of the partnership with Porsche, stating, “We wanted to create the most exciting car possible, authentic to its origins with minimal changes, presenting a vehicle that retains its racing edge whether on track or road.”
This highly anticipated vehicle stands poised to reignite the legacy of one of motorsport’s most celebrated brands as it heads toward the future.
