Gar Robinson Announces Transition from Full-Time Sports Car Racing
Two-time IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar champion Gar Robinson has declared his intention to step back from full-time sports car racing to explore new opportunities within motorsport. "This is not a retirement, this is not a goodbye. I’m just taking a step back," Robinson stated in a recent social media post.
Over six years in endurance racing, Robinson has achieved significant milestones, winning the IMSA LMP3 championships in 2021 and 2023 with Riley Motorsports. As a Bronze driver, he transitioned to LMP2 in 2024, further solidifying his reputation in the sport. Notably, prior to his IMSA success, Robinson secured SCCA Trans Am TA2 championships in 2015 and 2017.
Robinson’s achievements include victories at IMSA’s premier endurance events: the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Sebring 12 Hours, Watkins Glen 6, and Petit Le Mans—each won prior to his 30th birthday.
Moving forward, he plans to focus on off-road racing in North America and Brazil and aims to revive the Robinson Racing team, founded by his father in 1990. "There’s new challenges in front of me, like rally and desert racing, and personal projects I’ve been sitting on for quite a while," he explained.
Currently, Robinson and co-driver Felipe Fraga are third in the LMP2 championship standings after five races, demonstrating strong performance during their transition period.
