Anthony Hamilton Reflects on Lewis Hamilton’s Journey
In a recent interview, Anthony Hamilton shared pivotal insights into his son Lewis Hamilton’s remarkable ascent in Formula 1. At six years old, Lewis began karting and won the British cadet karting championship by age ten, a milestone that set the stage for his future.
Anthony recounted their fateful encounter with Ron Dennis at the Autosport Awards. “Lewis approached Ron and said, ‘One day I want to race for McLaren.’ Ron replied, ‘Here’s my number. Come back in nine years’ time,’” Anthony recalled. This interaction ultimately led to Lewis joining the McLaren-Mercedes Young Driver Programme at 13, making him the youngest driver ever to secure such a contract.
Reflecting on his own struggles, Anthony noted, “Nothing positive ever happened for me in my younger years. My life changed positively when I realized the opportunities before me." He emphasized the importance of perseverance: “Every time there’s a positive change, you just maximize it.”
When asked about parenting, Anthony stated, “There’s no manual. You learn as you go. The goal is for your child to be better than you.” He expressed pride in both his sons, describing them as “phenomenal individuals” and role models for others.
As Lewis Hamilton continues to dominate the sport, Anthony’s words underscore the blend of talent, tenacity, and guidance that have shaped one of Formula 1’s greatest champions.
