Kyalami Circuit Receives FIA Approval for Grade 1 Upgrade
The Kyalami circuit in South Africa has secured the FIA’s approval for a series of improvement works aimed at elevating its status to Grade 1, a necessary classification for hosting Formula 1 races. Currently classified as Grade 2, Kyalami is mandated to complete these enhancements within three years to meet the requisite standards for F1 events.
Toby Venter, the circuit owner, hailed the FIA’s acceptance of their proposed designs as a “defining moment for South African motorsport.” He emphasized the commitment made upon acquiring the venue in 2014 to restore it to a world-class level, asserting, "Today, we turn the page to a bold new chapter for Kyalami. We are ready for the return of Formula 1 to African soil."
The planned upgrades will not alter the existing track layout but will focus on improving safety features, including run-off areas, barrier systems, debris fencing, curbs, and drainage. Clive Bowen, director of Apex Circuit Design, referred to the upgrades as a “light touch,” indicating that the work would prioritize minimal disruption to existing operations.
While discussions with F1 about reintroducing the South African Grand Prix have been ongoing, Kyalami acknowledges that certain enhancements will only be implemented if a Grand Prix contract is secured. The pathway to hosting F1 involves a competitive landscape, with other potential projects in Cape Town and Rwanda also vying for attention, albeit without a clear frontrunner emerging as of yet.
Achieving Grade 1 status is a crucial milestone, but industry sources indicate that further negotiations are necessary before the F1 calendar can return to Africa.
