Gabriel Bortoleto’s Struggles Continue at Sauber Despite Promising Qualifying Performance
In the current Formula 1 season, rookie Gabriel Bortoleto finds himself at the bottom of the points table, mirroring the plight of only two other drivers—Jack Doohan and Franco Colapinto—who have yet to score. While teammate Nico Hulkenberg has accrued 20 points, Bortoleto acknowledges the veteran’s skill. “He’s taking out of the car more than he actually should be,” Bortoleto noted after the Canadian Grand Prix, emphasizing his respect for Hulkenberg’s performance.
Sauber, aiming to transition into Audi’s factory team next year, has managed recent improvements despite boardroom challenges. The team has identified solutions to recurring issues with chronic airflow separation in dirty air and has introduced a significant upgrade package in Spain, which included enhancements to the car’s floor and front wing.
Sporting Director Inaki Rueda clarified that the focus of these upgrades was to enhance driveability rather than simply boosting peak downforce. “As you put downforce on, you get a more peaky profile…this is hopefully the fix for that,” Rueda remarked.
Despite showing strong qualifying pace—Bortoleto has outqualified Hulkenberg several times—his race-day execution has faltered. This includes missteps during wet conditions and strategic oversights during safety car periods. The rookie’s difficulties on race days contrast with Hulkenberg’s ability to capitalize on opening laps and positioning.
Reflecting on his experience deficits, Bortoleto stated, “You see the race in a different way that I’m not able yet to see… I think I’m learning from him.” As the team maintains a supportive environment, Bortoleto is expected to receive the time and backing needed to develop and start scoring points.
Calm heads prevail at Sauber, as they steadily work towards optimizing their performance in a season rife with challenges and learning opportunities.
