Gabriel Bortoleto Struggles While Nico Hulkenberg Shines for Sauber
As the 2023 Formula 1 season progresses, rookie Gabriel Bortoleto finds himself without points, alongside only two other drivers, Jack Doohan and Franco Colapinto, who have not completed the season. Meanwhile, teammate Nico Hulkenberg has garnered 20 points, prompting speculation about the drivers’ comparative performances.
Bortoleto expressed admiration for Hulkenberg, stating, “He’s taking out of the car more than he actually should be… I think he’s an excellent driver.” This sentiment reflects a strong recognition of Hulkenberg’s experience, which has proven crucial in Sauber’s ongoing development.
Despite early-season promise, Sauber has faced challenges in maximizing race results. The C45’s chronic airflow separation in ‘dirty air’ has hampered performance, which was particularly evident during the season-opener in Australia. Hulkenberg’s scoring was largely attributed to strategic tire choices rather than a consistent performance benchmark.
Recent upgrades, including a new floor and revised wing designs, aimed to enhance the car’s driveability rather than focus solely on peak downforce. Inaki Rueda, sporting director, emphasized the need for a balance that would avoid a car that becomes "undriveable in tricky conditions."
Bortoleto’s difficulties with overtaking have been prominent, exacerbated by issues such as loss of downforce in traffic and physical challenges like buffeting during races. "I cannot follow very close, and then it’s impossible to overtake," he lamented after the Chinese GP.
While Bortoleto has shown speed in qualifying—often beating Hulkenberg—his race execution has been inconsistent. Mistakes, including spinning in wet conditions and misjudging start strategies, have limited his potential. As Bortoleto noted, “You see the race in a different way – that I’m not able yet to see,” highlighting his ongoing learning curve.
As Sauber prepares for its transition to an Audi factory team next year, the atmosphere within the team remains supportive of Bortoleto. Team principal Mattia Binotto’s decision to prioritize the rookie’s development signals a commitment to nurturing talent over immediate results.
With calm heads and a focus on long-term goals, Sauber is dedicated to providing Bortoleto the necessary time and resources to evolve as a driver capable of scoring points in the future.
