Austrian Grand Prix Qualifying: Hamilton Optimistic with Ferrari
SPIELBERG, AUSTRIA – Lewis Hamilton expressed satisfaction with his qualifying performance for the Austrian Grand Prix, where he secured a fourth-place start, marking his best result since joining Ferrari. The team introduced a new floor design that, despite initial complications during practice, significantly improved their competitive stance.
Hamilton’s achievement joins teammate Charles Leclerc on the front row, who qualified second behind polesitter Lando Norris. Speaking post-qualifying, Hamilton acknowledged the team’s efforts: “It’s a fantastic result. The team worked really hard back in the factory to bring us a new floor this weekend. For us to be much closer and to be on the second row is fantastic.”
Although Hamilton felt a technical issue on his final lap prevented him from surpassing Leclerc, he remained positive about the progress: "I think if I’d finished, it would have been second." His comments highlighted the team’s operational improvements, stating, “Today was the best day operationally… proper world-class.”
Ferrari continues to seek solid positioning in the championship, following a series of underwhelming performances. Hamilton, who last celebrated a grand prix victory in July 2021, refrained from discussing potential podium ambitions after qualifying, opting instead to focus on race day: “I’m not going to say that today. I’m just going to put myself towards action.”
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has faced scrutiny amid the team’s recent challenges. However, Hamilton praised their collaborative efforts: “We’re just working… step by step, it can’t be done in one go, but I’m really happy with the progress we are making.”
With expectations high for the race, Hamilton aims for his first podium with Ferrari, a target he aims to meet without jinxing his chances: “Hopefully, it won’t take 900 days," he added, referencing the long wait for his last win.
The Austrian Grand Prix offers a crucial opportunity for Hamilton and Ferrari to consolidate recent improvements on race day.
