Sauber Motorsport Expands Ahead of Audi Rollout in Formula 1
Sauber Motorsport has inaugurated a new technology center in Bicester, Oxfordshire, marking a crucial step in its transition to the Audi works team ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Audi will complete its full acquisition of Sauber, a Swiss team that has participated in F1 since 1993.
The new facility in the heart of the UK’s "Motorsport Valley," which already hosts seven F1 teams, aims to leverage the region’s talent pool. Audi’s F1 project head, Mattia Binotto, emphasized the center’s importance, stating, “This facility will allow us to tap into the talent pool in Motorsport Valley and further strengthen our technical capabilities.”
The Bicester site—spanning 444 acres—will not be included in next year’s cost cap, providing a financial advantage as Sauber grapples with high operational costs in Switzerland. CEO Daniel Geoghegan welcomed Sauber’s decision to site there, aligning with the goals of sustainability and innovation in performance.
Currently 9th in the 2025 F1 Constructors’ Championship, Sauber fields drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto, both under contract for 2026 as they prepare for Audi’s debut. As preparations continue, Sauber is optimistic about enhancing its competitive edge with Audi’s support and resources effectively mobilized from both Germany and Switzerland.
