Max Verstappen Remains Tight-Lipped About Future Amid Mercedes Speculation
At Silverstone, Max Verstappen avoided questions regarding his future in Formula 1, particularly the anticipated regulatory changes in 2026. Addressing a group of journalists, the Red Bull Racing driver maintained his silence about potential moves, despite noticeable interest from rival teams, including Mercedes.
"Well, they all got very short answers, so that was perfect actually," Verstappen remarked after a media session filled with repetitive inquiries about his contract and career trajectory.
Reports have surfaced suggesting that Verstappen’s representatives reached out to Mercedes, which could explain why team boss Toto Wolff has yet to extend contracts for George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Russell himself acknowledged that while the speculation exists, his chances of switching teams are "exceptionally low."
Verstappen has dismissed the notion of taking a sabbatical in 2026, emphasizing his commitment to the sport: "No, no, no. F1 for sure," he stated, indicating that he intends to combine his F1 career with GT3 racing opportunities in the future.
Addressing the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming regulatory changes, Verstappen acknowledged the unpredictability of 2026. "No one can say 100% sure that they will be pretty comfortable next year. There will be so many unknowns anyway," he explained.
Verstappen’s comments reflect a pragmatic approach to a shifting landscape in Formula 1, emphasizing the need for adaptability as teams gear up for the new regulations. As he succinctly put it, "The only thing that I have to do is drive whatever I have fast."
