McLaren’s Piastri Penalized in British GP Safety Car Incident
Silverstone, UK — McLaren driver Oscar Piastri received a pivotal 10-second penalty during the British Grand Prix for a serious infringement during a safety car restart. This decision significantly affected the outcome of the race.
On lap 21 of the 52-lap race, shortly after the safety car lights turned off, Piastri abruptly braked on Hangar Straight. This action forced second-placed Max Verstappen to take evasive maneuvers, temporarily overtaking Piastri in the process. The race stewards viewed Piastri’s hard braking—recorded at 59.2 psi, slowing from 218 km/h to 52 km/h—as erratic and in violation of FIA sporting regulations.
The stewards’ report stated, "When the clerk of the course declared that the safety car was coming in, Car 81 suddenly braked hard… resulting in Car 1 having to take evasive action to avoid a collision." They cited Article 55.15, which mandates that drivers must not engage in erratic behavior once the safety car lights are off.
Piastri expressed his frustration over the penalty, suggesting the ruling was inconsistent with prior interpretations of similar situations. "Apparently you can’t brake behind the safety car anymore… I’m not going to say too much, because I’ll get myself in trouble," he remarked, indicating his disbelief over the decision.
As a result of the penalty, Piastri relinquished the lead to teammate Lando Norris, who ultimately secured their first win of the season. Piastri’s championship lead over Norris has now narrowed to just eight points following the race.
This incident not only highlights the strict enforcement of safety protocols in Formula 1 but also raises questions about consistency in officiating during critical race moments.
Race Result

The British Grand Prix demonstrated the razor-thin margins that define success and failure at the pinnacle of motorsport, as well as the continued rivalry within McLaren.
