Hulkenberg Secures Maiden Podium at British Grand Prix as Sauber Celebrates Major Milestone
Nico Hulkenberg, at 37 years old, finally claimed his first Formula 1 podium at the 2025 British Grand Prix, finishing third after a resilient race from the back of the grid. This significant achievement came after 239 races in the championship and marked a pivotal moment for Hulkenberg and the Sauber team, which is set to transition to a works Audi operation in 2026.
The race was dominated by McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who finished first and second, respectively. Hulkenberg’s performance was highlighted by careful strategy and flawless execution, earning him praise from Sauber’s team principal, Jonathan Wheatley. "Nico drove an outstanding race today. One of the best I’ve seen at Silverstone," Wheatley remarked after the race.
Wheatley expressed astonishment at the long wait for Hulkenberg’s podium, noting, “It seems incredible that we’re all celebrating a podium, as it feels like he should have been getting them throughout his career.” He firmly believes that with the right circumstances, Hulkenberg could potentially secure a race win in the future.
Sauber has seen a remarkable turnaround in performance, having previously struggled throughout the 2024 season, only scoring four points. The team’s recent upgrades and Wheatley’s leadership have propelled them into the midfield, now sitting sixth in the constructors’ standings, a notable improvement given earlier season predictions.
Hulkenberg himself acknowledged the significance of the podium, stating, “This was a long time coming. I hope it’s the first of many.” His third-place finish is not only a personal triumph but also a crucial milestone for Sauber, marking its first podium since 2012. The team celebrated this achievement with champagne and festivities, reinforcing a positive momentum as they prepare for the future.
Wheatley emphasized the importance of momentum within the team: “For me, what I take from today is that people start believing in us.” The team’s strategy, executed expertly under challenging conditions, showcases their potential moving forward in the season.
This podium position comes as Sauber continues to build on its recent successes, having also achieved a double points finish in Austria prior to Silverstone, signaling a promising trajectory ahead.
