Red Bull Part Ways with CEO Christian Horner, Appoint Laurent Mekies as Successor
In a significant restructuring move, Red Bull Racing has terminated the contract of CEO and team principal Christian Horner, effective immediately. This change marks the end of Horner’s 20-year tenure, which began when Red Bull entered Formula 1 in 2005. The team confirmed this decision to RACER on July 9, 2025.
Taking over as CEO is Laurent Mekies, who previously held the position of team principal for the Racing Bulls. Alan Permane has been appointed to replace Mekies in that role.
Horner’s dismissal follows a period of declining performance for the team. While Max Verstappen secured the drivers’ championship last season, Red Bull finished third in the 2024 constructors’ standings and currently sits fourth this year, trailing behind McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes. Verstappen faces a challenging title fight, currently 69 points behind Oscar Piastri.
This personnel change comes amid ongoing speculation surrounding Verstappen’s future, with potential links to a move to Mercedes by 2026, fueled by performance-based clauses in his contract lasting through 2028.
Horner’s leadership saw Red Bull achieve eight drivers’ championships, six constructors’ titles, and 124 race victories, making his departure a notable chapter in the team’s history. Oliver Mintzlaff, Red Bull CEO of corporate projects and investments, expressed gratitude for Horner’s contributions, noting, “With his tireless commitment, experience, expertise, and innovative thinking, he has been instrumental in establishing Red Bull Racing as one of the most successful teams in Formula 1.”
Mekies brings extensive experience, having served as Ferraris’ deputy team principal and racing director before joining Red Bull. His previous roles at the FIA and Arrows, along with his extensive background in Formula 1, position him well for the challenges ahead.
