Sainz Questions Red Bull Snub After Ferrari Departure
Carlos Sainz has expressed confusion over his exclusion from a potential return to Red Bull Racing, following his recent dismissal from Ferrari for the 2025 season. The Williams driver, who made his F1 debut with Toro Rosso in 2015 alongside Max Verstappen, believes his past rivalry with Verstappen was healthy and suggests it should not hinder a future partnership.
Sainz reflected on their early years in an interview, stating, “We had a rivalry… but it was relatively healthy. If that’s the reason for my exclusion, I don’t understand why they wouldn’t want me next to Max.” His comments come after Red Bull initially signed Liam Lawson to partner Verstappen but quickly demoted him, opting instead for Yuki Tsunoda, who has struggled to keep pace with Verstappen.
Sainz highlighted that, unlike many of Verstappen’s teammates, he managed to compete effectively in their shared time, stating, “I didn’t have this tough time. I was surprised by Max’s speed, but that experience gave me confidence against any competitor.”
The Spaniard noted that his success at various teams, including a race victory in 2023, demonstrates his capability against top rivals. “I’ve been teammates with very quick guys, and it just makes me want to be up against the best,” Sainz asserted.
This season has seen Sainz emerge as a strong contender, evident by his position as the only non-Red Bull driver to secure a win. As the F1 landscape evolves, his performance continues to solidify his reputation as a formidable driver, capable of competing with the elite.
