Liam Lawson Reflects on Red Bull Journey and Future Prospects
Liam Lawson, who stepped into the Formula 1 spotlight as part of the Red Bull Racing program following Daniel Ricciardo’s departure last season, remains focused on delivering strong performances amid uncertainty about his long-term future. The Kiwi driver was promoted to Red Bull at the start of 2024 after Ricciardo was sidelined, but returned to Racing Bulls after two races, securing a career-best fifth place in Azerbaijan.
In a candid discussion about his trajectory, Lawson emphasized the need for patience and consistency. “We need to have good performances to stay in the sport, and that’s honestly what I’m focused on at the moment,” he stated, acknowledging that his recent success in Baku was a positive, yet he knew more was required in upcoming races.
The 21-year-old expressed the pressure inherent in F1, noting, “Unless you’re on multi-year contracts, you don’t feel settled. The only time you’re secure is when you’re performing.” He pointed out that this expectation is a key aspect of the Red Bull program, where performance directly influences progression.
Reflecting on his relationship with Ricciardo, Lawson described the transition following the Australian’s injury and subsequent benching as “extremely uncomfortable.” Despite the challenges, he praised Ricciardo as a supportive figure throughout the process. “He sent me a nice message after Baku,” Lawson said, indicating the camaraderie and respect that persists between them.
As Lawson looks ahead, he is prepared for an exciting array of upcoming races, leveraging his experiences to enhance his performance and solidify his place in the highly competitive F1 landscape.
