Riley Motorsports to Debut Ford Mustang GT3 in IMSA GTD Class for 2026
Mooresville, N.C. — Riley Motorsports has officially announced that it will field a Ford Mustang GT3 in the GTD class of the 2026 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The team received the car at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, marking a significant step forward for both the team and the Mustang racing legacy.
The livery of the new Mustang GT3 features a striking white base with red stripes, reminiscent of the Motorcraft-sponsored 1985 Roush / Protofab Mustang GTO, which won an IMSA class championship that year.
Ford Racing’s global sports car manager, Alex Allmandinger, expressed enthusiasm for Riley’s involvement: “We’re really excited to have Bill Riley and his team on-board with Ford Racing. The Mustang GT3 is capable of winning top-level GT races globally.”
Bill Riley, co-owner and president of Riley Technologies, noted the personal significance of the new program: “It feels like ‘coming home’ in a way, having grown up in Detroit… This is a very exciting time for Riley Motorsports.”
The Mustang GT3 will not only compete alongside the factory-backed Ford Multimatic Motorsports GTD Pro entries but also represent the fourth team utilizing the Mustang in the IMSA Championship, following Proton Competition and Gradient Racing.
This announcement comes as Riley Motorsports prepares for its final races in other categories, including a partnership with Gar Robinson in LMP2 and providing services for the soon-to-be-paused Lamborghini SC63 GTP program.
The move to field the GT3 underscores Riley Motorsports’ commitment to high-performance racing and enriches the Mustang’s extensive motorsports heritage, originally designed by Bill’s father, Bob Riley, who created the Ford Mustang GTP in 1983.
As the 2026 season approaches, all eyes will be on the Mustang GT3 as it aims to carve out its place in the competitive landscape of IMSA racing.
