McLaren Drivers Address Singapore Incident Ahead of U.S. Grand Prix
In the wake of the on-track incident during the Singapore Grand Prix, McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have publicly discussed the actions taken by the team in response to the contact that occurred between them. The collision transpired on the opening lap when Norris attempted an overtaking maneuver at Turn 3, resulting in light contact with Max Verstappen’s car and subsequent contact with Piastri.
Following the race, Norris acknowledged that McLaren held him responsible for the incident. “The team held me accountable for what happened, which I think is fair… We want to avoid those kinds of situations in the future,” he stated. This recognition of responsibility was echoed by Piastri, who expressed satisfaction with how McLaren has handled the situation. “We had a lot of discussions… Lando’s taken responsibility for that, and so has the team,” Piastri said.
Despite the tension, both drivers affirmed their commitment to team dynamics moving forward. Piastri highlighted the clarity in their racing ethos, emphasizing that the incident on lap one did not reflect their intentions as teammates. He remarked, “I’m very happy [there’s no favoritism]… Everything has had a justifiable reason.”
While Norris finished ahead of Piastri during the race, tensions remain as McLaren approaches the U.S. Grand Prix. Both drivers are focused on collective performance while maintaining competitive aspirations in the championship fight. As they navigate these complexities, clear communication and alignment on racing strategies will be vital for McLaren’s success in the coming races.
