Mexico City Grand Prix Qualifying: Piastri Faces Challenges as Norris Secures Pole
In a qualifying session characterized by contrasting performances, Lando Norris delivered a remarkable lap to secure pole position for the Mexico City Grand Prix, outperforming both Ferrari drivers. Oscar Piastri, his McLaren teammate, struggled to match that pace, ultimately qualifying eighth.
Norris clocked a standout time in Q3, positioning him as the front-runner for the race. Although Piastri will advance to seventh due to Carlos Sainz’s grid penalty, the 0.6-second deficit to Norris remains perplexing for the rookie driver.
“Everything feels normal, but the gap was big in that session,” Piastri stated. “It’s been big all weekend. I feel like I can tidy it up and make some easy progress, but not all of it. The lack of lap time is a bit of a mystery.”
Piastri noted parallels between this weekend’s performance and his struggles at the previous race in Austin. “The gap’s been consistent across sessions. I’ve done decent laps, but it seems to be four-to-five tenths off each time. It’s a difficult place to be when you think you’ve put in a reasonable effort.”
He expressed frustration over the recurring issues that prevented him from unlocking the necessary pace: “I haven’t changed my driving from earlier in the season, so it’s hard to pinpoint the lack of performance.”
As he prepares to start the race two positions behind Max Verstappen, Piastri aims for an aggressive start to mitigate championship implications. “I’ll try my best. It’s the longest run of the year, so I’ll look to make up some spots. If I can unlock the pace in the car, then we can have some fun.”
