Toyota Unveils GR GT3 Ahead of 2027 Launch
Toyota Motor Corporation has officially unveiled the GR GT3 as part of a trio of high-performance models, including the road-going GR GT and the Lexus LFA Concept, a battery-electric sports car. The GR GT3 is set for a tentative market launch in 2027, marking a significant step forward in Toyota’s racing portfolio.
Designed as the successor to the Lexus RC F GT3, the GR GT3 aims to build on the latter’s successful racing legacy, particularly its performance in the 2023 IMSA WeatherTech GTD PRO Championship and the FIA World Endurance Championship’s LMGT3 class.
Engine and Design
The GR GT3 will be powered by a four-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, identical to that of the GR GT. Notably, it will not incorporate the GR GT’s transaxle hybrid unit. Both vehicles are engineered with a low center of gravity, lightweight yet rigid chassis, and optimized aerodynamics—key factors that shape their performance.
The GR GT3 is longer and wider than the RC F but features a slightly shorter wheelbase. The development team included prominent figures such as Akio “Morizo” Toyoda, Daisuke Toyoda, and experienced factory drivers Hiroaki Ishiura, Tatsuya Kataoka, and Naoya Gamou.
Driving Experience and Support
Toyota aims to provide an engaging driving experience for both amateur and professional racers. The company plans to establish a comprehensive support system to enhance the motorsport experience for its customers.
The unveiling of the GR GT and GR GT3 signifies the culmination of a journey that began with the GR GT3 Concept presented at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2022. Both models underwent private testing across various circuits worldwide throughout 2023 and recently showcased their capabilities during the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.
As Toyota gears up for the GR GT3’s introduction, the motorsport community can anticipate a new era of competition aligned with the brand’s racing heritage.
