Zhou Guanyu Joins Cadillac as Reserve Driver Ahead of F1 Debut
Cadillac’s newly established Formula 1 team has named Zhou Guanyu as its official reserve driver for the upcoming 2026 season. This strategic appointment follows the team’s need for an experienced reserve, particularly with Colton Herta unable to serve in that capacity due to insufficient FIA Super License points.
Zhou transitions to Cadillac after a brief tenure as Ferrari’s reserve driver, where he contributed valuable insights and experience. He previously raced with Sauber from 2022 to 2024, sharing the team with current Cadillac driver Valtteri Bottas. The duo developed a strong rapport despite often contending with underperforming machinery. This relationship, coupled with Zhou’s connection to Cadillac team principal Graeme Lowdon, influenced the decision to sign him.
“I am delighted to join the Cadillac Formula 1 Team as a reserve driver ahead of its Formula 1 debut,” Zhou stated. “This is one of the biggest and most exciting new projects that the sport has ever seen. I have worked with both Graeme and Valtteri for many years… I know I can add huge value to the Cadillac Formula 1 Team.”
Zhou’s departure from Ferrari was confirmed on January 2, with the team expressing gratitude for his contributions as reserve driver. Lowdon emphasized the meticulous process behind Zhou’s selection, stating, “Our process for selecting a reserve driver has been as thorough as the search for our race drivers. Zhou fits the bill perfectly. He will be a great asset to us as we go racing in 2026.”
With a driver lineup featuring Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas, the Cadillac team is looking to leverage Zhou’s experience as it embarks on its first season in F1.
