Audi Powers Up for F1 Entry with New Power Unit
Neuburg, Germany — Audi marked a significant milestone in its ambitious Formula 1 project with the successful fire-up of its new power unit in late December. This event was heralded by Mattia Binotto, head of the F1 project, as a moment full of “incredible energy” that signals the team’s commitment to excellence and innovation.
As Audi transitions from Sauber to a full constructor for the 2026 season, this marks the introduction of a new power unit supplier in Formula 1. The integration of the power unit with the chassis has been a multi-year effort, culminating in the successful test that has energized the entire team.
“A fire-up is always a special moment, but this one marks a new beginning,” stated Binotto. “It is the tangible result of our collective ambition… We have built a solid foundation for what will be a long journey.”
The upcoming calendar includes a private shakedown in Barcelona at the end of the month, prior to the pre-season testing set for Bahrain in February. Team Principal Jonathan Wheatley emphasized the significance of this milestone, saying, “This successful fire-up is a critical milestone that validates the quality of the work and collaboration across all departments.”
Audi CEO Gernot Dollner reinforced the importance of this project for the brand, stating, “Entering Formula 1 is a key part of our brand’s ongoing renewal. This milestone is a clear demonstration of our ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ ambition… marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in Audi’s motorsport history.”
The official launch of Audi’s 2026 season, complete with its race livery, is scheduled for January 20 in Berlin, just days before the Barcelona shakedown.
