Peugeot’s 9X8 Receives Minor Updates Ahead of 2026 FIA WEC Season
As the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) prepares for significant changes across its Hypercar category, Peugeot’s 9X8 will only see minor aerodynamic updates for the 2026 season. The French manufacturer has reportedly exhausted its allocation of ‘Jokers,’ leading to these limited refinements ahead of the new campaign.
Team Principal Emmanuel Esnault noted, “If you compare the two cars, the 2025 and 2026, you can spot the difference, but you have to be an expert.” The updates involve adjustments in six or seven areas of the bodywork, primarily to recalibrate homologation for the new Windshear wind tunnel in North Carolina, which replaces the previous Sauber facility.
Peugeot TotalEnergies concluded the 2025 season strongly, securing podium finishes at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) and Fuji, and achieving top-10 finishes in the last four races. This streak puts them ahead of rivals, with no other manufacturer claiming more than one double-points finish as they head into 2026.
With an updated Michelin tyre debuting at the season-opener in Imola, Esnault acknowledged the risks involved: “Changing a tyre compound is never a minor thing,” highlighting the uncertainty around the tyre’s impact on vehicle dynamics. The 9X8 has just recently tested the new tyres in Portimão.
Despite the limitations of their current car, Peugeot maintains a long-term commitment to the Hypercar formula, aiming for a return to form after an underwhelming performance since their 2022 return to prototype racing. Esnault remarked, “We have to respect that and not disappoint the brand.”
Looking beyond 2026, preparations are already underway for a new challenger in 2027, as Peugeot seeks to align their strategic goals with evolving regulations. “It’s something we are working on very hard,” Esnault suggested, providing an ambiguous timeline for upcoming announcements.
Overall, Peugeot’s strategy reflects a commitment to continuous improvement while navigating the competitive landscape of the WEC. The team is focused not only on their own performance but also on maintaining the championship’s vitality as it moves toward its centenary Le Mans in 2032, aiming for a stronger, unified platform for continued manufacturer engagement in endurance racing.
