Postponement of SUPER GT Malaysia Race Due to Geopolitical Crisis
Sepang, Malaysia – The GT Association (GTA) has announced the indefinite postponement of the 2026 SUPER GT Malaysia GT 300km Race, originally scheduled for June 20-21 at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit. The decision follows the escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which is causing widespread energy shortages and travel restrictions.
In response to a government-issued work-from-home mandate aimed at reducing fuel consumption, Malaysia has advised postponing large-scale events that don’t meet national interest criteria. This directive takes effect April 15, soon after the GT World Challenge Asia’s opening round at the same venue.
Rising international freight and air travel costs contributed to the postponement, impacting logistics managed by local rights holder HARO Sports & Entertainment.
GTA Chairman Masaaki Bandoh stated, “We will return to Sepang when conditions allow for a safe, stable, and high-quality event.” He emphasized solidarity with those affected by the Middle Eastern crisis, expressing gratitude for the support and understanding from stakeholders and fans.
HARO Sports Managing Partner Fahrizal Hassan added, “While this was not what we envisioned for the second year running of the Malaysian round, we are committed to making it twice as exciting when the race returns.”
The ongoing conflict has already led to the provisional postponement of the FIA World Endurance Championship Qatar 1812km and impacted two Formula 1 rounds in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
The successful return of SUPER GT to Sepang in 2025 drew nearly 76,000 spectators, solidifying its position as a key event on the motorsports calendar. Given the circumstances, the GTA and HARO Sports may extend their three-year contract for the event into 2027, contingent on future developments.
