McGrath Reflects on His Historic 1993 AMA Supercross Season
In an exclusive interview, Jeremy McGrath revisited his pivotal 1993 season, marking his rise as a dominant force in the AMA/Camel Supercross Series after joining the Team Honda factory team. This transition catalyzed McGrath’s journey, which began with uncertainty and culminated in an unprecedented winning streak.
“I remember reading in my contract about a top-three bonus,” McGrath recounted. “I thought, ‘Can you make my bonuses through fourth place?’ They agreed, but soon after, I started winning every race.” McGrath secured a remarkable 48 wins with Honda, each yielding an $8,000 bonus, prior to his tenure with Suzuki and Yamaha where the rewards escalated to $50,000 per win.
Reflecting on the early races of the season, McGrath experienced initial setbacks, finishing fourth in Orlando and fifth in Houston due to mechanical issues. “At Houston, my bike never felt right,” he admitted. “The handlebar mounts were on backward. We figured it out post-race, and then Anaheim happened.”
Anaheim marked a turning point for McGrath. “I remember that night vividly,” he said. “Passing Jeff Stanton, one of my heroes, was surreal. He left the door open, and once I took the lead, I was off.” This victory signaled the start of McGrath’s historic streak and solidified his legacy in the sport.
McGrath noted the growing buzz surrounding his success: “I felt the popularity growing, especially on the 125. It was magnetic, as if everything was aligning with my style.” The pressure of his newfound status was palpable, yet he thrived under it. “Beating Stanton was surreal. I still couldn’t believe how easily it happened,” he said, acknowledging the significance of that achievement.
As McGrath reflects on his defining 1993 season, it’s clear that confidence and breakthrough performances transformed him from a promising talent into an icon of motocross.
