AMA Announces Significant Rule Changes for 2027 Supercross Season
The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) has unveiled an eight-page bulletin detailing critical updates to the rulebook for the upcoming 2027 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship. These adjustments, aimed at enhancing competition and safety, include modifications to age restrictions, sound testing, and rider participation protocols.
Key Changes
-
Minimum Age Requirement: The minimum age to compete professionally will rise to 18 years, a shift from the previously set age of 17.
-
Sound Limit Regulation: The pre-race sound check limit has been established at 109 dB/A, a change prompted by feedback from manufacturers.
-
Entry Cap Adjustments:
- The maximum number of riders per class will decrease from 80 to 66.
- Main event participation will be limited to 20 riders, down from 22, in order to reduce lapped traffic on the track.
- The qualification process will change, with only the fastest 38 riders advancing to the night show, instead of the top 40.
-
Heats and Transfers:
- Heat races will now consist of 19 riders, down from 20, with the top eight transferring to the main event.
-
Points Structure:
- The revised points distribution for a 20-rider main event reverts to a historical standard, with the aim of synchronizing the Supercross and Motocross points systems.
-
Triple Crown Format Changes:
- Riders will no longer use a second motorcycle for Triple Crown races.
- Only the top 16 riders will qualify, with those placing 17 to 38 proceeding to the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ).
