2026 FIA WEC Season Update: Championship Tensions Mount at Monza
As the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship heads into its concluding round at Monza, the Hypercar sector has solidified Toyota’s dominance, with four victories securing both titles. However, the LMGT3 class presents a more unpredictable narrative, with seven different cars winning over the seven-race season, indicating a fiercely competitive field.
Entering the 6 Hours of Monza, several teams are still in the hunt for the championship. The leading contender is Jonny Edgar in the #33 TF Sport Corvette Z06 LMGT3.R, who boasts a significant 18-point lead. A top-five finish will secure him the title—an achievement not seen since Richard Lietz’s triumph in 2015.
“It’s been a good season… We knew it was about picking up consistent points, which we’ve done a pretty good job of,” Edgar stated. His key competitor, the #92 The Bend Manthey Porsche 911 GT3 R, driven by Yasser Shahin, Riccardo Pera, and Lietz, emerged from victory in Barcelona, contending to keep Manthey’s title streak alive.
The Porsche faces a challenge in form of 30 kilograms of success ballast and a driver with no prior Monza experience, despite testing at the circuit in August. Pera acknowledged this as a challenge but remains optimistic: “We have nothing to lose and will do our best to prepare.”
Racing Team Turkey’s #34 Corvette Z06 LMGT3.R and the #69 Team WRT BMW M4 also enter with title aspirations, but must rely on misfortune for the leading Corvette to have a chance at the championship. Peter Dempsey of Racing Team Turkey emphasized their must-win situation, stating, “All we can do is do the best job we can.”
Crucially, TF Sport is positioned strongly in the teams’ standings, likely to secure its first FIA WEC Teams’ title since 2022 with both cars in contention. The team has demonstrated consistency throughout the challenging season, setting them up favorably for 2027’s rule changes that award points across two entries.
In summary, with the championship expectations high and several teams still in contention, the Monza finale promises high stakes and thrilling racing. As the sun sets over the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, Edgar, along with his rivals, face a decisive race that will determine the season’s champion and reshape the competition’s landscape heading into the future.
