Miami Grand Prix Sprint Qualifying Report
Miami, FL – Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured his first Formula 1 sprint pole position at the Miami Grand Prix with a time of 1:26.482, narrowly beating Oscar Piastri by just 0.045 seconds. Antonelli’s fastest lap, set during the final runs of the session, positioned him ahead of Max Verstappen, who had also attempted a second qualifying lap on soft tires.
Piastri, who ultimately qualified for the front row, acknowledged a crucial lock-up at Turn 17 that hindered his chances for pole. "I had a lock-up into the last corner, which I think was probably where pole went away," he remarked, adding, "P2 is still a good result; we can still fight from there in the sprint tomorrow."
Lando Norris completed a solid performance for McLaren, finishing third, albeit half a tenth slower than his teammate. Norris expressed satisfaction with his lap, emphasizing the importance of competitiveness following recent struggles in qualifying rounds. "It felt good. I’m happy just to get a good lap in there," he noted.
Both drivers expressed optimism about their prospects for the sprint race. Piastri stated, "I think we’ve got a bit more pace to unlock," while Norris commented on the team’s potential, indicating that they were "in the ballpark" for a more competitive push during the main race.
The sprint race promises to be a thrilling contest as McLaren seeks to enhance its position against strong competition, notably from top teams like Mercedes. As the F1 community looks forward to the main event, all eyes will be on Antonelli as he aims to convert pole into a critical advantage.
