Miami Grand Prix: Safety Protocols Implemented Amid Lightning Threat
The Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, set to take place at 4 PM local time at Hard Rock Stadium, is under strict safety protocols due to forecasts of thunderstorms in the area. The FIA has mandated that the race may be suspended if there is a risk of lightning strikes, aligning with local public safety standards.
In a statement, the FIA clarified that the stewards, empowered under Articles 11.9.2.a and 11.9.3.n of the FIA International Sporting Code, have decided to implement a series of precautionary measures. Should lightning pose a threat, the following procedures will be enacted:
- The race will be suspended as per Article 57 of the Sporting Regulations.
- All vehicles must return to the pit lane, halting in the designated fast lane.
- Teams will be informed via the official messaging system to push cars back to the garages while keeping garage doors open until further notice.
Non-compliance will result in penalties, including repositioning cars at the rear of the grid upon resumption.
This decision follows Saturday’s chaotic sprint race, marred by heavy rain that resulted in crashes for drivers Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz. Additionally, the F1 Academy race was canceled due to inclement weather on Sunday.
