Imola Practice Results: McLaren Outpaces Red Bull as Verstappen Struggles
In a challenging opening day at the Imola Grand Prix, Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing expressed concerns about his team’s performance, finishing the second practice session in fifth place and trailing the pacesetter, Oscar Piastri of McLaren, by 0.442 seconds. This gap highlights Red Bull’s struggle to keep pace with competitive rivals.
Verstappen’s disappointing performance followed a difficult first practice session, where he faced overtakes from both McLaren drivers during longer runs. "We tried a lot of bits; some worked better than others, but overall we are not fast enough at the moment," Verstappen stated. He also conveyed low confidence, stating, "At the moment, not very high," when asked about his chances for pole position.
Red Bull has introduced several updates, including a revised engine cover and enhancements to rear suspension, but these alterations have not yielded the expected progress. Team advisor Helmut Marko acknowledged the team’s ongoing struggles, saying, "McLaren is still four tenths ahead—quite a lot on this track." He contrasted this with Red Bull’s performance at the Miami Grand Prix, noting a slight improvement, stating, "In Miami, we were seven tenths to a second behind. Here, it looks like we are about four tenths behind."
Marko also indicated a potential silver lining, pointing out that Yuki Tsunoda is performing closely to Verstappen, suggesting that the updates might be heading in the right direction.
As the teams prepare for qualifying, the focus will shift to tire degradation and race pace, areas where Red Bull hopes to gain an edge. The gap to McLaren remains a pressing concern for Red Bull as they seek to regain their competitive footing this season.
