McLaren’s Oscar Piastri Secures Pole Position at Emilia Romagna Grand Prix
In a dramatic qualifying session for the 2025 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri clinched pole position, narrowly outpacing Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing. Piastri’s lap time of 1:14.670 seconds places him at the front of the grid for Sunday’s race, marking his third pole this season.
Verstappen initially led the qualifying session with a time of 1:14.772 seconds after Q3’s first runs, ahead of Piastri and Lando Norris. However, on his final lap, Piastri improved in the latter sectors, despite a less-than-ideal final corner. Verstappen’s attempt to regain the top spot fell short, finishing just 0.034 seconds behind.
George Russell of Mercedes secured third ahead of Norris, while Fernando Alonso gave Aston Martin a morale boost by qualifying fifth, his best performance to date this season. Both Aston Martin drivers utilized the C5 medium tires effectively, a strategy that proved advantageous over Pirelli’s new C6 compound.
Ferrari Faces Setback in Home Race
Ferrari’s hopes of a strong showing on home soil were dashed as both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton exited in Q2, qualifying 11th and 12th respectively. Leclerc missed the cut by a mere tenth, while Hamilton trailed further back.
Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli struggled in his home race as well, finishing 13th, while Alpine’s Franco Colapinto, who crashed during Q1, qualified 15th but faces a potential grid penalty for a pitlane incident earlier in the session.
Crashes Disrupt Q1
Q1 witnessed two red flags due to crashes involving Yuki Tsunoda of Red Bull and debutant Franco Colapinto. Tsunoda’s crash at Turn 5 resulted in a barrel roll, fortunately leaving him uninjured. Colapinto’s incident, as he spun off at Tamburello, brought a premature end to Q1, impacting a number of drivers’ qualifying efforts.
The session concluded with Liam Lawson unable to complete his final attempt due to the red flags, landing him in 16th place alongside Raikkonen’s teammates and Haas drivers Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman.
As the teams prepare for race day, Piastri’s performance establishes him as a key contender, while Ferrari seeks to recover from a disappointing qualifying session on their home turf.
