Monaco GP Insights: A Challenge for Overtaking and Strategy
The Monaco Grand Prix remains a formidable challenge for overtaking, with significant limitations imposed by the circuit’s narrow and winding roads. Historical data reveals that meaningful on-track passes for the lead have been virtually non-existent since 1985, when Michele Alboreto passed Alain Prost. Recent races have seen similar outcomes, where the majority of positional changes stemmed from pit strategies and incidents rather than overtakes.
The 2022 Monaco GP showcased this trend with a red flag after a multi-car incident on the opening lap, allowing all drivers to switch tire compounds. Oscar Piastri remarked, “At one point, we were going slower than Formula 2,” highlighting the subdued racing pace dictated by the necessity of strategic tire management.
In response to persistent concerns about minimal overtaking opportunities, the FIA has mandated a minimum of three tire sets to be used by all drivers in future Monaco races. However, experts argue this is a temporary fix, as teams are likely to synchronize pit stops, limiting strategic diversity.
Pirelli’s introduction of the new C6 tire at Imola aims to alter the dynamic. This tire has been tailored for street circuits like Monaco and is hoped to provide a more significant performance differential, encouraging varied pit strategies. Pirelli Motorsport boss Mario Isola stated, “We are trying to push teams towards a two-stop strategy for more action and unpredictability.”
Feedback has indicated that the performance gap between Pirelli’s current dry-weather compounds is too narrow, leading teams to favor one-stop strategies. Isola acknowledged, “With the three compounds being so close, teams naturally opt for the hard and medium to execute a single-stop strategy.”
The forthcoming deployment of the C6 tire across various circuits, including Canada and Singapore, will be crucial in testing its potential to enhance racing strategies. Comprehensive data collection at Imola demonstrated that while the C6 has a sharp performance peak, excessive thermal stress could lead to performance degradation within a single lap.
Pirelli’s strategic overview suggests the potential to mix compounds across race weekends to foster different strategic approaches. As Berra noted, “For Singapore, we are contemplating bringing the C6 and also starting to jump compounds.”
With alterations to tire strategy and performance, the 2023 Monaco GP could transform from a largely processional affair into a more dynamic race, fostering excitement in a historically challenging arena for overtaking.
