Aston Martin’s Strategy to Attract Verstappen: Focus on Performance
Aston Martin’s Managing Technical Partner Adrian Newey has emphasized that the only way to attract reigning world champion Max Verstappen to the Formula 1 team is by building a competitive car. Newey, who officially joined the organization on April 3, aims to enhance the team’s performance from their new Silverstone headquarters. He is part of a high-profile lineup that includes CEO Andy Cowell and former Ferrari tech chief Enrico Cardile, along with Honda as their engine partner for 2026.
Rumors have circulated regarding Verstappen’s potential move, including a staggering $1 billion offer from team owner Lawrence Stroll. Although Verstappen has exit clauses in his Red Bull contract that could enable him to leave before 2028 if not contending for titles, recent improvements in Red Bull’s performance suggest he may remain with the team at least through 2026.
In interviews at the Monaco Grand Prix, Newey stated, "Max is clearly a phenomenal talent, and he’s a supreme competitor. If we’re to ever attract Max, the first thing we have to do is make a fast car." He stressed that success on the track is the key to making Aston Martin appealing to top drivers.
Newey also expressed a long-term interest in working with double world champion Fernando Alonso, while defending current Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll against perceived criticism. "Lance has an unfairly bad driver rap," Newey explained, noting that Stroll has performed competitively against seasoned teammates like Sergio Pérez and Sebastian Vettel.
As Aston Martin positions itself for a title challenge under F1’s new regulations, Newey’s insights underscore the critical need for speed and competitiveness in their strategy.
