Leclerc’s Bold Strategy Leaves Him Seventh on Grid for Spanish GP
Barcelona, Spain — Charles Leclerc’s strategic tire choices during qualifying for the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix resulted in a disappointing seventh-place start. The Ferrari driver opted to reserve tire sets for Sunday’s race, a decision he acknowledged did not play out as he had planned.
Leclerc began Q1 aggressively, utilizing an additional set of tires, then aborted a second run in Q2, leaving him with only one new set for Q3. This limited his opportunities, and despite a strong initial lap that put him fourth on the grid, he could only watch as competitors like Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Lewis Hamilton, and Max Verstappen posted faster times.
“I take full responsibility for the qualifying outcome,” Leclerc stated. “With two sets in Q3, it’s always easier. I believe I could have gained some time, but it didn’t work out.” He conceded that the decision to run in the middle of the qualifying session, rather than a later, clearer window, was his own.
Leclerc explained his approach as a calculated risk. “I wanted to implement a ‘Plan B’ in case my first lap didn’t go to plan. If we have a bad race tomorrow, then I’ll take full responsibility; if it goes well, I’ll be glad to take credit,” he added.
Despite acknowledging the subpar grid position, Leclerc remains optimistic about the race. He emphasized, “P7 is below our expectations. However, the choices are made, and I hope it pays off tomorrow.”
Leclerc will line up alongside Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and just behind teammate Hamilton, setting the stage for a crucial race that could validate his tire strategy. The implications of this qualifying performance, compounded with Leclerc’s own reflections, will shape how the team approaches the race ahead.
