Thailand Moves Closer to Formula 1 Grand Prix

Bangkok, Thailand — Alex Albon is actively collaborating with the Thai government to establish a Formula 1 Grand Prix in Bangkok, revealing significant advancements in the planning stages. With Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali’s recent visit underscoring interest, the prospect of a Thai Grand Prix is gaining momentum.

Albon expressed optimism, stating, “It all looks really promising,” as the Thai cabinet has approved a $1.2 billion budget aimed at hosting the event by 2028. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has been supportive, although her political situation is currently under scrutiny following recent controversies.

Despite potential political challenges, the push for a Grand Prix remains robust. Albon commented, “It seems like they’re taking it very seriously… everything I’ve seen – the circuit, the initial plans – it all looks really promising.” He noted that preparations are underway to ensure effective infrastructure and logistics for the event, with a location selected outside central Bangkok to mitigate traffic concerns.

The initial circuit design diverges from typical street layouts, with Albon describing it as “having more character,” a factor likely to enhance the race experience.

Albon’s role extends beyond being a driver; he aims to promote motorsport and sports tourism in Thailand, aligning with the government’s vision for economic enhancement through global sporting events. “We’re working with the government… to get it as big as we can,” he affirmed.

In a competitive landscape where multiple countries vie for F1 inclusion, Thailand appears well-positioned to secure its place on the calendar, bolstered by committed governance and strategic planning.
